"So How Was Your Day At School?"

We've all been there. You come home from a long day of 3rd grade and all you can think about is getting to the box of Oatmeal Cream Pies before your siblings and eating the last one while watching Duck Tales (woo-hoo!).

Your Mom, however, wants to know how the day was and what you did. If you were like me in 3rd grade, your answer was along the lines of "I dont know" and "nothing". Well, things have changed!

For my Leadership class, I've been asked to start a project where I positively influence others. The project is supposed to be something I've been wanting to do and something I feel passionately about. This led me to think about my MBA experience. I have a lot of people ask me questions about it. People are usually looking to answer 1 of 2 questions:

1) "Is what you're learning as a MBA worthwhile for me to consider going back to school"

or

2) "I'm having such and such problems in my company, what are they teaching you in business school that could help me improve my business?"

In response to friends and family looking for business tips or considering a graduate degree (and in my own desire to keep a record of what I'm learning in school) I'm going to blog each day after class some key takeaways from the day. The goal is to keep it SHORT (after all I've got snacks and cartoons to watch when I get home), to keep it interesting, and insightful.

Part of the project is showing that I actually made a difference. In order to do so, I'd like to know what kind of things you'd like me to blog about: The work load? Ways to grow a company? Better methods of hiring good employees? Tips on networking and job finding?

The purpose of the blog is not to act like I'm a pro or know it all on these subjects, but a way to share what I'm learning and help people get answers to questions. Also, feel free to add advice and tips.

Looking for Jobs in the Big Easy

Although its September and only 1 month into our last year of the program, MBAs are already looking for jobs upon graduating in April. Many companies start interviewing in Sept./Oct. to make offers before Christmas for jobs in May. Confusing?



Anyways, in hopes of getting in front of the best companies looking to hire I headed to New Orleans to attend the National Black MBA Career Fair. No, you don't have to be black to go. There were whites, blacks, indians, asians, latinos, and even a few extra-terrestrials. I thought I would feel out of place, but everyone was very cordial and I had a great time.

There were actually 50 of us BYU students who traveled to New Orleans together. We had fun walking the streets, tasting the NOLA grub, and sharing stories about our interviews.




Speaking of interviews, I scored THREE! One with AutoZone, Harley-Davidson, and EcoLab. They all went well and I'm hoping to hear from them and other companies who asked to interview me at another date. I'm really excited about the future!


My good friend and old roommate Scott Fryer came down from Purdue for the same event. We had a great time reminiscing and talking interview strategies.






Other than Texas, I've never been to the South before. Its quirky, historic, has great food, and is HUMIDDDDDDDD.

Go Fish.

Curtis and I headed up the canyon tonight to do a little fly fishing. Within one hour we had 6 fish on the line. At one point Curtis got his line caught in a bush so he handed the pole to me. Within seconds (literally) I had one. What a rush! Now I know why he's addicted. He got two huge ones on the line and they both flew down the current into the fast moving water. Unfortunately they both got away, leaving us with only a big fish story to tell. Check out the action.

The Heyman's Are Sooo Poor That...

A few months ago Cbug and I were asked to speak in church about Self Reliance. Candace did a wonderful job. During my talk, I shared a few personal stories. One in particular was about how my family was poor, yet obedient to the commandments during and after my dad's law school. When we first moved to Arizona we had an orange Ford Pinto with no air conditioning! 120 degree heat without a/c is not fun. The car looked like this:




I mentioned in my talk that because there was no a/c my mom gave us squirt bottles to keep ourselves cool in the Pinto. One day in Mesa, the car got so hot sitting in a grocery store parking lot that my Legos MELTED together in the back seat!

A week later one of my friends from church was stopped by a 6 year old in our ward who said "Have you heard about the Heyman's?"

My friend: "No, what about them?"

6 year old: "They are soooo poor that their Legos melt together!"

I guess she had been telling this to lots of people and was sincerely concerned with how poor we are! To further the ward rumor that we are extremely poor, I have now been bartering the fish I catch for fruit with neighbors. Last night I showed up at a ward member's door step with a fish and we came away with fresh strawberries! Not bad.


Can I pay my tuition with fish?
